Founded in 1965, Southwest School of Art is a nationally recognized leader in visual arts education, offering a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, as well as studio art programs for adults, children, and teens. Each year nationally and internationally recognized artists of all media are brought to Southwest School of Art to conduct workshops and lectures. On Friday, October 18th, Southwest School of Art will host Visiting Artist Talk featuring Rainey Knudson.
Trained in literature and entrepreneurship, Rainey Knudson is the founder and former publisher of Glasstire, which is the oldest online-only art magazine in the country. She named the magazine as an homage to artwork by Robert Rauschenberg, who was originally from Port Arthur. Knudson bought the glasstire.com domain in 2000 for $35 and built the original website. Today, Glasstire has an annual budget of over half a million dollars and a staff of eight. Its archive of 36,000 articles and events chronicle nearly two decades of the Texas visual art scene.
Knudson recently stepped down as Publisher of Glasstire. She has spoken or written about arts journalism at Rice University, Emory University, the USC Annenberg School, the El Paso Museum of Art, College Arts Association, the National Endowment for the Arts, among others. She has also spoken about caregiving at Houston Methodist Hospital.
Southwest School of Art hosts contemporary art exhibitions and produce educational programming for the benefit of the greater San Antonio community, all of which is provided free and is open to the public. The campus is also home to a small history museum, and a lunch café. During a typical year, more than 225,000 people attend events, view exhibitions, enroll in classes and visit the historic site.
The Visiting Artist Talk event is free to attend. For more information, please contact Chad Dawkins at 210-200-8263 or exhibitions@swschool.org.
